How to Configure Apple Mail/iCal on Snow Leopard to use UW Outlook Live
Note: These instructions only work if you are using Snow Leopard on your Mac as they assume Microsoft Activesync support. Activesync support was added in Snow Leopard, it is not available when using Leopard or Tiger. To find out if your Mac is running Snow Leopard, from the Apple Menu click About this Mac. Snow Leopard will be 10.6.something.
Activesync is far superior to setting up Apple Mail in IMAP mode as it gives you full synchronization of not just mail, but also your calendar and contacts with Outlook Live. This means that you can use Apple iCal on your Mac, have all this information synced with your iPhone and access everything via the web version of UW Outlook Live available at outlook.com.
Before setting up Apple Mail, verify that your Outlook Live account is setup and working properly. You can do that by following the steps in Part 1 and Part 2 on this page. (Note Part 3 talks about Outlook for Windows, skip that and come back to these instructions).
Setup Instructions:
1. Open Mail - on the Desktop click on Go, Applications, Mail.
2. If you have already been using Mail, Mail will open as normal. Select the Mail menu, then Mail Preferences, then Accounts in the menu bar at the top of the Preferences box. Hit the + sign in the lower left corner to add a new mail account.
Both new and existing Mail users should then see a screen like the one below.
a) In the Full Name box, enter your name, for example Mary Jones.
b) In the Email Address box, enter netid@ol.uw.edu (for example mjones@ol.uw.edu). Note: The ol stands for "Outlook Live" and it is just used during this particular setup step to get your account working. You don't need to use that ever again and your email will still come from @uw.edu when you send messages to others.
c) In the Password box, enter the password for your Outlook Live account, and then click Continue.
d) An error message will come up on the bottom and a red arrow asking you for your username.
e) In the User name field type your email address without the "ol" for example, "mjones@uw.edu" and click continue.
You will see an account summary like the screen below.
Check the boxes to set up your Address Book contacts and iCal calendars. Click Create and you should be set.
Apple Mail and iCal should now be configured to use UW Outlook Live!
