Register your existing email address with Windows Messenger
At the iSchool many of us Windows Live Messenger to communicate. IM (Instant Messaging) affords many advantages over email or the telephone among which are:
- Instant Response. If the person you are messaging with is on line, they can reply right away. Sometimes email is just too slow when safety or some other emergency is a concern.
- Security. Email can potentially be intercepted and is inherently not secure. Only the person(s) involved in your IM session will see your messages.
If you want to use IM in the workplace, we recommend that you register your UW email address and that you do not use an existing Hotmail, etc. address.
To install Windows Live Messenger you can go here:
http://get.live.com/messenger/overview
or if you are using Windows Vista you can click:
Start > Download Windows Live Messenger
To register your UW email address with Windows Live Messenger once it is installed go here:
http://registernet.passport.net
Scroll down to "Sign up today" and then under "Use an e-mail address you already have" click the "Get started now" link and follow the directions.
Once you have registered your UW email address you will also need to verify it so that you can change your display name from myuwnetid@u.washington.edu to "Joe Smith", etc. The first time you log in to Windows Live Messenger you will be prompted to verify your email address. Click the message window and follow the directions to verify your email address. The process will send you an email message so that you can prove this address is indeed yours.
Lastly - you will want to add any other iSchool folks to your IM contacts that you need to message with AND specify what Anti Virus software to use for scanning file transfers under:
Tools > Options > File Transfer
If you are using McAfee VirusScan the file to select is:
C:\Program Files\McAfee\VirusScan Enterprise\scan32.exe
