How to use the built-in microphone for recording with the iMacs
The iMacs in the computer lab have built-in microphones that can be used for recording audio. Before we can do that, there is one thing that needs to be adjusted.
Double-click the red Realtek speaker icon (NOT the white speaker icon that controls the volume). This will pop up the Realtek HD Audio Manager configuration screen.
Make sure the recording volume is set fairly high (about 75%) up and the playback volume is muted (click the volume icon until it shows a red X).
Click the three-pronged thing next to the "Recording Volume" volume icon.
This will pop up a microphone boost dialog. Set it to +20 dB.
You are now ready to record audio. When you are done don't forget to turn the playback volume back on.
