Set up a dial-up connection for travelling
In the event that there is no wireless Internet or Ethernet connection available, the iSchool does have a backup dial-up account through Earthlink available for use while travelling.
You will need the username and password, which can be obtained from IT in person or over the phone.
Then you will need local access numbers for wherever you are travelling. You can search for access numbers at the Earthlink site. It is recommended that you print out this list of numbers for future reference.
The next step is to create a dial-up connection in Vista. Go to Start > Control Panel > Network and Internet and double-click Network and Sharing Center. Click "Set up a connection or network" on the left.
Then click "Set up a dial-up connection" and hit Next.
Windows may not detect a modem, but hit "Set up a connection anyway."
Type in one of the local access numbers from the Earthlink site, the username, and password. Leave the "Remember this password" and "Allow other people to use this connection" boxes unchecked. Then click create.
Go back to Network and Sharing Center, click "Connect to a network" and select your newly created dial-up connection to connect via modem.
If there are specific dialing rules (i.e. dial 9 for outside line), those can be configured by right-clicking on the connection and selecting Properties. Check the "Use dialing rules" box and make the changes needed.
