Problem accessing file links on UW 'courses' web sites after installing Windows XP SP2 update

After updating Windows XP with the the Service Pack 2 (SP2) you may experience the following problem when trying to access absolute links on UW 'courses' web sites, while using Internet Explorer. This will not happen if the link is relative on a courses site.

When you click the file link, the new Windows SP2 security settings may block the file from opening. Normally you would just click the 'blocked bar' that shows up under the URL address area and ask it to allow the file to go through, but what I've seen happen is that you end up at the UW Net ID security page redirect and cannot go further.

Here is the fix I've found for clients who cannot access absolute links on 'courses' web sites:

  1. In Internet Explorer, select the 'Tools' menu, then select 'Internet Options'
  2. Go to the 'Security' tab, and then click the 'Trusted Sites' zone icon (it is green circle with a check mark)
  3. From here you want to click the 'Sites' button in the same window
  4. Add the following web site to the zone:
https://weblogin.washington.edu (click the 'Add' button to add it)
