How do I perform a manual backup of my iSchool (Microsoft Windows or Apple) computer?

iSchool IT currently provides automatic backup services for iSchool issued computers running Microsoft Windows and the iSchool software image. If you are not using a Windows computer with the iSchool software image or want to perform a manual backup here are your options.

Windows

There are times when you will not be connected to the wired UW network for extended periods of time which will cause our automatic backup to fail. In this case you will receive an email letting you know there is no recent backup and you should perform a manual backup. Also, if you are about to embark on a trip it is a good idea to run a manual backup before you leave.

To perform a manual backup open Windows Explorer and browse to here:

N:\IT Tools

and run the "BackupNow_Vista.cmd" script.

If you are away from the wired UW network (read: not on the UW campus or using wireless), you will need to connect to the iSchool VPN first. Here are those instructions:

Then you can map the N drive (if needed) so you can run the above script. Here is how to map the N drive if you have not done so already:

Mac

If you are using a Mac or anything other than an iSchool issued computer that is running Microsoft Windows and the iSchool software image there is no automatic backup option and you will need to choose your own manual system of backing up your files on a regular basis as the above method will not work.

We recommend keeping an external hard drive handy and using this to backup your files. We also recommend using a backup program instead of just copying files.
