How do I fix the memory leak and macro problem with EndNote 6 in Word XP?

I have had many reports of problems on our systems with people who use EndNote 6 within Word XP on our machines. There is a memory leak in the default EndNote add-in file, which causes problems to occur with the macro settings. The solution below seems to fix things for most people.

Remove the EN6CWYW.WordXP file (or EN6CWYW.WordXP.wll for those of you who have the show file extensions option turned on) in the Word startup folder and replace it with the EN6CWYW.wll file from the EndNote program folder. This file is a Word.Addin.8 file, so be sure not to mix it up with the EN6CWYW.dot file, which is a Word template.

The Word startup folder is located here on iSchool systems running Windows XP:

C:\\Documents and Settings\username\\Application Data\\Microsoft\\Word\\Startup

Some of these folders are hidden so you will need to turn on the unhide file feature to in Windows Explorer to see them (Click Tools -> Folder Options and select the View tab).

Swapping this add-in file into the Word Startup folder will avoid the macro settings error, and will in fact fix the memory leak problem. Be sure not to miss that step of swapping in the other add-in file or else the EndNote 6 tools will not work.
