How do I find out my IP address and computer (host) name?

It is often very convenient to include specific network information about the computer you are using when you submit a help request to ihelp@uw.edu. Generally all we need is the Host Name and IP address for most common troubleshooting tasks.

To find the IP address on a system running Windows XP, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Start Menu -> select Run...
  2. Type cmd.exe into the toolbar that says Open:
  3. At the command prompt type ipconfig /all

If you have Vista, follow these steps:

  1. Click the Start Menu and type cmd into the search box. Press Enter.
  2. At the command prompt type ipconfig /all

Note: The computer name is the same as the Host Name.
